Other than phototoxic reactions of the skin, what are some common health problems for an EPP sufferer to watch out for?
All of the reactions of the skin result form the abnormal photosensitivity. The symptoms may occur immediately after sun exposure, such as itching and edema, or occur with some delay (blistering).
Some people may, however, have their EPP associated with liver complications such as hepatotoxicity and report loss of appetite, nausea, weakness and fatigue, pain in the upper abdomen and jaundice. Progressive liver dysfunction may lead to hepatosplenomegaly (increase of liver and spleen), and the end-stage liver disease usually manifests as intense jaundice, ascites, fever, encephalopathy and hemorrhage from esophageal varices.
